What are Crowns?
Crowns are used in situations where a tooth has been damaged from tooth decay, other factors, or a cosmetic enhancement is needed. Also known as a “cap”, they take on the shape of the tooth and are applied over the tooth to restore the shape or size, improve the appearance, or improve the tooth’s strength.
Crowns are generally made out of stainless steel, metal, porcelain, or all-resin. The decision on the specific material used will be based off of the current tooth’s condition, coloring requirements, and whether or not the crown is to be temporary or permanent.
When Do I Need Crowns?
A dentist will be the only one who is able to determine if a patients teeth needs crowns or not. Crowns are used when a tooth has been damaged by tooth decay and a filling is no longer able to be used on the tooth.
If a patient has cosmetic requirements, a crown can be used in order to enhance the appearance of the tooth as well. Finally, they can be used to restore broken teeth or to hold dental bridges and cover up a dental implant as well.
