What Are Inlays & Onlays?
Two tools that are vital to the dental industry, inlays and onlays are used when old feelings are in need of removal or replacement. Inlays are similar to fillings and fit inside to top edges (cusp tips) of the tooth. Often made of substances such as gold, an onlay is a more extensive version and extends over the cusps of the tooth.
An inlay fits inside the cusp tips of the tooth and helps to protect the drilled out portion of the tooth. These can be either permanent or temporary depending on the treatment method your dentist chooses. An onlay fits over the cusps of treated teeth and fits on the top of the tooth to protect the area.

Dental inlays & onlays used in a number of ways. Inlays are used to repair teeth that have other options such as fillings. On the flip side,are considered to be indirect fillings that provide patients with a study, well-fitted and longer lasting option to repair things such as structural damage or tooth decay. The onlay in created in a lab and bonded to the damaged tooth once it has been fitted to your liking.
In some cases, these are permanent but in cases where more dental work is needed they may be a temporary fix until the tooth can be properly repaired.
