Our Team of dental professionals is here to help you with your retainers.
Retainers are a versatile type of custom-fitted dental equipment designed to hold teeth in place. There are three major kinds of retainers: Hawley retainers, clear retainers, and fixed retainers. Hawley retainers are what most people think of when they hear “retainer”; they are made of plastic molded to fit the roof of the mouth with metal wires surrounding the teeth.
Clear retainers are made of vacuum-formed plastic that fits over the teeth and is almost invisible to the casual observer. Fixed retainers are bonded in place behind the teeth and can only be removed by a dental professional.
Retainers are most commonly given to children who have recently had braces in order to hold their newly straightened teeth in place. Retainers alone can help correct more mild orthodontic issues, such as a misaligned bite, crowded teeth, or teeth that are slightly crooked.
Your dentist may also recommend a retainer if you have a speech impediment, grind your teeth (also known as bruxism), or snore due to airway blockage. Sometimes retainers can be given to patients following oral surgery.
The costs of your retainers may usually be covered by your dental insurance plan or extended dental coverage.
